USA 1998, Bright Eyes Series, 32 c, Cat, Dog, Hamster, Parakeet and Fish

Five popular pets appear on a set of 32-cent Bright Eyes commemoratives.

The self-adhesive stamps, designed by Carl Herrman of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and illustrated by Bill Mayer of Decatur, Ga., are the latest additions among other youth-oriented issues.

Each Bright Eyes design has a hidden security image produced through a process called scrambled indicia. The dog design features a hidden dog bone and doghouse. The cat design has a paw and mouse, the parakeet a bird cage, the hamster an exercise wheel and the fish has bubbles coming from its mouth.

This encoding process scrambles, distorts and overlaps images and symbols that, when printed, will not be visible to the naked eye. The images become clear only when viewed through a specially manufactured decoder lens. The decoded images cannot be effectively reproduced or counterfeited, and many governments have used this process as a safeguard for printing items such as stocks, bonds, passports, banknotes and postage stamps.
